Known for its wildlife and eco tours, New Zealand's oldest city (although Auckland may argue that) is a scholarly city of Scottish heritage.
It is home to the University of Otago, the very first university in New Zealand, built in 1896. Some of the most beautiful Victorian architecture can be found here. Scottish roots are celebrated often with Pipers marching through the city streets. Visit such landmarks as the Larnach Castle, one of the many places known for their amazing botanical gardens. During their October springtime the resident open their beautiful gardens for all to see.
When booking your roundtrip airfare, be sure to hire a car so you can trek around the metropolitan area for a real feel of Dunedin city life. Nightlife is sweet here, as it is the home of the Dunedin Sound. This great Indie sound, started by the Flying Nun record label, was the hype of the Indie airwaves in the 80's and early 90's. You can still catch some live performances at Chicks Hotel. The local pubs are very cool, they have cozy, comfy café-like atmosphere. Enjoy a pint on a couch by a roaring fire.
Then wake up, wax the surf boards, and head on down to Aramoana Beach. The Surf is always up here, nice waves and friendly locals are what this beach is known for. After the beach, take a little eco tour, the one that David Bellamy raves to be "the finest example of eco-tourism in the world." You'll see everything from fur seals to yellow-eyed penguins, and the breathtaking beauty of the mainland Royal Albatross.
Dunedin is also home to the Rugby world cup 2011.
Fans are getting ready, for this is the 3rd largest sporting event in the world. For the adventurer in you, there is also a nude Rugby game performed on Baldwin Street by a bunch of lovely, unclad gentlemen.
Whether its sports, entertainment, or natural beauty, you'll find it all in Dunedin.
