Clayton - Dine out in Melbourne's south-eastern suburb
Clayton is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria's capital city, 11 miles south-east from the city centre. Having a rental vehicle will help you get out and about in the city. The area of Clayton was first used as farming land in the 1850s. The original name for the suburb was Clayton Vale. Clayton is known for being one of the largest centres of science, technology and research in all of Australia. Institutions include Monash University, Monash Medical Centre, CSIRO, Bosch, Australian Stem Cell Centre, Australian Synchroton, Australian Regeneterative Medical Institiute and the Centre for Human Bioethics.
Clayton's main focus, where you will find a relaxed atmosphere of shops and cafes, is the shopping strip that runs along Clayton Road. At the northern end of the shopping area is the local railway station, which will take you to Melbourne's city centre. The nearby Clayton Reserve is a welcome break from the city streets. Here you will find the famous Clayton Reserve Drinking Fountain. While the artist is unknown, this domed granite fountain is one of Melbourne's treasures.
The area around Clayton has a range of car rental outlets to enable you to get around Melbourne's many attractions. Stay at the Clayton Monash Motor Inn and Serviced apartments on Dandenong Road. This three and a half star luxury resort has motel units and apartments with separate lounges, Foxtel television and room service. The reception sells beer and wine for an afternoon thirst quench and there is plenty of onsite parking for your rental car. There is a bus stop outside with buses that will take you directly to Chadstone Shopping Centre for a day of retail therapy.
Clayton has a fantastic range of dining options with a terrific range of cuisines represented.. Warung Gudeg on Clayton Road is an Indonesian restaurant that boasts the best Gudeg in Melbourne. Apart from this speciality dish, they have a range of other quality recipes such as Lontong Cap Gomeh, Lontong Sate Ayam and Ayam Goreng Kalasan with a special home-made sambal. Clayton Road is the place to go to for a great selection of oriental cuisines - The Malaysia Garden Restaurant, Wah Kee Chinese and Malaysian, Kang Na Roo Korean Restaurant and Anshumann Da Dhaba, an Indian Restaurant to name but a few. Alternatively, the Monash Hotel located on the Princes Highway does pub meals, the Il Mondo Spaghetti Bar on Dandenong Rd does Italian and there is a range of pizza places as well.
Clayton also has a great range of bakeries, including Monash Pastry Bakery on Clayton Rd, Buttercup Bakeries on Fairbank Rd and Carinish Bakery & Cafe, as well as specialty cake shops to satisfy your sweet tooth. Pick up some sandwiches and pastries and head off on the hire car for a pleasant picnic.
